Hey, Chubby Bunny! Read The Knife of never letting go - Patrick Ness; if you haven't already! (novel). It's also dark preteen with  a great "post apocalyptic" angle. I just really like his style. he is bleak, I tells ya, but in the most delightful way.
(everyone else should read it too :-)

suggestion for Ashfall: The edge chronicles (especially the first few) and barnaby grimes. Paul stewart and chris riddell. I like their stuff. quirky and very readable, love the illustration style and works with short attention spans (kids). I am reading Muddle earth by thems atm, not the best work but still cute.

@Psycow: your toilet is blocked. And you have watched White Chapel&the cottage, right? I have not seen Psychoville yet, so don't anybody gloat!

I second that.

Alas no. Unfortunately. I started one with a friend, but never completed it, life kinda got in the way

That happens a lot.

I remember seeing a few framed comic pages on the walls of the old Gotham. I thought for a second that this meant people in the 'scene' were getting into it, but no.

There were a few groups of students and design pros in CT, Durban and TVL releasing self-publishing material a while back. Dunno what happened to them.

Nothing, or atleast nothing major. I occasionally see some self-release comics at the comic shop, but nothing worth getting excited about or that lasts long.

For self-publishing, I think webcomics are the way to go. Even if you xerox your stuff and keep the cost down it's still a mission to get shop owners to give you shelf space. Then you have to follow up with the bastards and haggle with them to give you your money (if any). In the end all you get is (significant )hassle for (insignificant) exposure. If you go the webcomics route, all you need is Wordpress (free) with the Comicpress plugin (free) and somewhere to host it (cheap).

Thanks for all the recommends. It proved too difficult to make a final decision (too many good choices), so I made a list of all the possibilities, and bought a gift card/disposable Visa. I will pass both on and let the boy make his own final decision, ideally during the famous post-Xmas sale events, when he will be able to get three of whatever it is, for the price I'd pay for one during the pre-Xmas period.

Own decision = good show!
